Vishwa Hindu Parishad president Shri Ashok Singhal has turned 80. A grand felicitation function was held at Kamaraj Memorial Hall in Chennai on September 11 and 12 to celebrate the occasion.

On September 11, one lakh Maha Mrityunjaya Japam were performed by 108 Vedic pundits. On September 12, starting from 6.30 a.m. onwards, Rudra Ekadasi Japam, Homam, Sathabhisheka Shanti Homam and Maha Mrityunjaya Homam were followed by Poornahuti and Abhishekam. The Abhisheka Theertham consists of waters brought from sacred rivers like the Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, Mansarovar, Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri and Koti Theertham from Rameswaram.

The Poornahuti ceremony was attended by Kanchi Shankaracharya Swami Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal, Shri Santhalinga Ramaswamy Adigal, Perur, RSS Sarsanghachalak Shri K.S. Sudarshan, senior BJP leader and former Union HRD Minister Dr Murli Manohar Joshi, former Union Minister Dr Sahib Singh Verma, Janata Party president Dr Subramanian Swami and many other dignitaries.

The same day evening at 5.30 p.m. there was a felicitation function at Kamaraj Memorial Hall. Here again, Shri Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal and RSS Sarsanghachalak Shri K.S. Sudarshan were present. Also present were Swami Vishveshteertha Maharaj of Pejawar Mutt, Udupi and other leading saints. Dr Murli Manohar Joshi presided over the function. Rajasthan Chief Minister Smt Vasundhara Raje, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Dr Subramanian Swamy also attended the function.

More than 3,000 people from different parts of the state participated in the event.
