English in Assam Now compulsory from class three By Mithun Dey RECENTLY, speaking at a function, the Chief Minister of Assam Shri Tarun Gogoi said, "No society can evolve without education. Consequently, the State Government had always given stress on education and improving the education scenario in the State. In these ten years, we have succeeded in bringing about significant changes in the education sector of the State." The Chief Minister added, "Many educational schemes have been executed by our government so far. About 5,000 Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS) centres have been converted into LP schools and 20,000 teachers have been appointed on contract basis in these schools. Besides free textbooks, we will also be giving two sets of uniforms to the students." Further. He said, "English should be made compulsory in schools from Class III." Sharing a similar view, the Education Minister of Assam Shri Gantam Bora also said at the function, "People say that the number of students in Assamese medium schools is gradually decreasing. If English is made an obligatory part in these schools from Class III, students will continue studying in Assamese medium schools instead of hastening to get admission in English medium." The Education Minister further said, "The National Council of Educational Research & Training (NCERT) syllabus has been taken on for main subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science and Hindi. This has been done so that when our students appear in competitive exams they are at par with the students of other parts of the country." Only education can meliorate the fate of man as well as society. English is must at primary level schools in all vernacular schools. Most of the time, it is seen that students coming from non-English medium schools face much problems due to lack of the knowledge of English. And, due to this they go to attend English speaking classes, the minister said.
